The challenge

Gurugram has 24 MW of solar rooftop installed against a potential of around 200 MW — just 12% utilisation. Per capita electricity consumption here — roughly 4,000 kWh per year — is among India’s highest. Rooftop solar already makes clear economic sense for commercial and industrial users. Residential adoption remains the lagging segment. High upfront costs, lack of vendor trust, and unfamiliarity with net metering are the main barriers — all of which the PM Surya Ghar scheme and community aggregation can resolve.

💡 What more is needed
Gurugram is at just 12% of its rooftop solar potential. Closing the gap requires a Gurugram-specific solar mission backed by GMDA targets in the next Master Plan update, mandatory solar provisions in the revised Building Bye-Laws, and a trusted community vendor certification programme. The economics are compelling — coordinated city-level execution is what’s missing.
