History & origins
Named for a legend — transformed by industry
Gurgaon derives its name from “Guru Gram” — the village of Guru Dronacharya, legendary teacher of the Pandavas and Kauravas in the Mahabharata. Through Mughal rule and British administration, it remained a quiet agricultural district. The transformation began in the late 1970s with Maruti Udyog (1981) and Hero Honda (1983) choosing Gurgaon for their manufacturing plants, followed by DLF’s real estate developments. By the 2000s, Gurgaon had become the preferred destination for multinational BPO and IT offices, earning the title “Millennium City.”

Governance challenges
A city racing ahead of its own planning
- Urban–rural divide: Peripheral villages still lack basic amenities while central Gurgaon has world-class infrastructure
- Environmental pressure: Declining groundwater, vehicular pollution, and Aravalli encroachment require urgent, coordinated action
- Fragmented governance: MCG, GMDA, HSVP, and DTCP operate in silos — a unified approach is essential
- Inclusive growth: Affordable housing, slum resettlement, and skill development for Gurugram’s large migrant workforce remain unresolved
